How to convert Numbers to Excel
- Choose your .numbers files. They can come from Numbers on a Mac, iPhone, iPad or iCloud. Several at once is fine.
- Pick the output. One .xlsx per file in a ZIP, or everything together in a single workbook.
- Click Convert to Excel. Each table becomes an Excel sheet with its values, dates, text and merged cells.
- Download the .xlsx and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice on any computer.
Private by design: nothing is uploaded
The .numbers file is opened and converted in your browser, on your own device. There is no server in between: the page only downloads its own code and the open-source SheetJS library from this site. Check it in the Network tab of your browser’s developer tools, or go offline after the page loads.
It is the quickest way to open a .numbers attachment on a Windows PC without an Apple account and without sending the file to a third party.
What is a .numbers file?
.numbers is the format of Apple Numbers, the spreadsheet app included with every Mac, iPhone and iPad. Since Numbers 3.0 (2013) a document is a ZIP package of “IWA” archives: Protocol Buffers messages compressed with Snappy. No version of Microsoft Excel, on Windows or on Mac, can open it directly, which is why a .numbers attachment so often arrives as an unreadable file.
Numbers also works differently from Excel. A sheet is a free canvas that can hold several tables, charts and text boxes, while an Excel sheet is a single grid. When converting, every table becomes its own Excel sheet.
Why convert Numbers to Excel
- Open it on WindowsExcel cannot read .numbers. An .xlsx opens everywhere: Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice, phones and tablets.
- Send it to colleaguesClients, accountants and offices usually expect an Excel file.
- Upload it to other servicesImport forms, banks and online tools accept .xlsx or CSV, not .numbers.
- No Mac at handNumbers can export to Excel (File › Export To › Excel), but only on an Apple device or in iCloud with an Apple account.
What is kept and what is not
We tested the converter with documents saved by Numbers 15 for Mac and opened the results in Microsoft Excel.
Kept
- Every sheet and every table (extra tables on a sheet get their own Excel sheet)
- Numbers, text, accents and emoji
- Dates, as real Excel dates
- The results of formulas, as values
- Merged cells
Not kept
- The formulas themselves: Excel receives their last result
- Number formats such as percentages or currency (0.25 stays 0.25, not 25%)
- Fonts, colours, borders, column widths and table styles
- Charts, images, shapes and text boxes
- Checkboxes and other controls become plain numbers (a ticked box is 1)
Numbers stores numbers as decimals. To avoid tiny rounding noise such as −35.300000000000004, the converter keeps 15 significant digits, the same precision Numbers and Excel show.
If you need the formulas and the formatting, open the document in Numbers and use File › Export To › Excel. Use this page when you are not on an Apple device or when you have many files to convert.
Known limitations
- Old Numbers ’09 documents use a different format that cannot be read here. Open them in a current version of Numbers and save them again.
- Password-protected documents are encrypted. Remove the password in Numbers (File › Set Password) first.
- Package documents. Some older or iCloud-synced documents are saved as a folder rather than a single file and cannot be picked in a browser. In Numbers, choose File › Advanced › Change File Type › Single File and save it again.
- There is no file size limit or quota; large documents are limited by your device’s memory. On phones, keep files under about 20 MB.
